Basketball Terms

Air Ball: A shot that does not touch the rim and the
backboard.
Alley-oop: When a player catches a pass from his
teammate in mid-air and slam dunks the ball.
Assist: A pass to a
teammate who then immediately scores.
Backcourt: The half of the
court where the defense is playing. Also refers to the guards on either team.
Boxing Out: Keeping your body between the basket and an opponent
when going up for a rebound.
Board: A term that can be used to
describe a rebound or the act of rebounding.
Brick: An unsuccessful
shot attempt that strikes the rim forcefully.
Charging: A foul
committed by an offensive player who has the ball and runs into a defensive
player who is still standing.
Double-Double: A term indicating that
a player has accumulated at least 10 units in two statistical categories.
Double Figures: Ten or more units in any statistical category. eg.
Points, rebounds, assists, etc.
Fast Break: An attempt to move the
ball quickly downcourt after a rebound and score before the opposing team can
set its defense.
Field Goal: A shot taken from anywhere on the
floor. Field goals are worth two or three points, depending upon whether or not
they were taken from beyond the three-point line.
Foul Shot/Free
Throw: An uncontested shot attempt from the foul line. Foul shots are
awarded when the opposing team fouls a player in the act of shooting, or when
the opposing team commits a foul against a team that is already in the bonus.
Frontcourt: Term that describes the center and forward positions
Goaltending: A violation that occurs when a defensive player
interferes with a shot that is on its downward flight and has a chance of going
in the basket.
Key: The free throw land and circle
Overtime: An extra period or periods that result when there is a tie
score at the end of the regulation time allotted
Personal Foul:
Illegal body contact between two players
Pick and Roll: A play in
which an offensive player sets a pick or screen on the defender of the ball and
then cuts toward the basket in an attempt to receive a pass from the person he
set the pick on.
Power Forward: A frontcourt position that requires
strength and, most often, height. Power forwards are called upon to rebound,
defend, and score close to the basket. Also referred to as the #4 position.

Rebound: The recovery of a shot that bounces off
the backboard or the rim
Screen, or Pick: The maneuver of an
offensive player who hopes to free a teammate from the guard of a defensive
player by setting himself in the path of the defender.
Small
Forward: A frontcourt position that requires both guard and forward skills.
Small forwards are often called upon to play close to and far away from the
basket.
Steal: To take the ball from an opponent
Stuff:
To forcibly block an attempted shot
Technical Foul: A violation of
the rules of conduct
Three Point Shot: A field goal attempt made
from a certain distance
Traveling: Taking one or more stops without
dribble when you have the ball
Trey: Another word for a 3 point
shot
Triple-Double: Double-digit scores for one player for baskets,
rebounds, and assists or blocks in one game
